Jumping into my western wear pulling on my cowboy boots and putting on my hat, causes my blood to stir. Today is my first time in a bunk house but I’m not alone. There are fifteen other greenhorns or tender foots with me. Most of my comrades are city folk. Sure we’ve all seen a horse but it was on TV or at the parade. Today we get to experience the real thing. The question that flashes through my mind is whether I am ready to learn to saddle that wild snorting beast.

The door opens and in steps the lead hand. He says “the first order of business today is to head of to the corral for a lesson on saddling our horses.” So off we go. I look for the smallest beast I can find who’s over in the far side of the corral. Yup that one’s for me. As I tip my hat and approach the small gray mare grazing at the feed trough I’m a little surprised.

Well actually it’s more like I’m shocked. That small gray mare stands over a foot taller than me. Wow! now what to do. After all who am I kidding, I’m no cowboy. But with some help I managed to saddle the monster. Swinging up into the saddle my mind drifts to a western movie with me as the trail boss setting off on a cattle drive.

Suddenly with the movement of my steed I instantly come back to my senses to realize this beautiful beast is walking out of the corral and I’m about to experience my first adventure. After many miles of riding along a cool grassy plain our group of tender foots comes upon a small steam. Perfect, it’s time for a rest.

I swing out of my saddle. My legs and rear end feel like they’ve had had the flesh peeled right off of them. The excruciating pain leaves me moving pretty slow. It seems to take an eternity to be able to sit down on the cool grass. Wow I must be a wuss I think. Even with my aching body I feel an exhilaration like I’ve not ever felt before.

Looking at the other riders it appeared that they too had suffered this same fate. Yet even with this new found pain there is a smile of contentment on all the tender foots faces. As we stretch out and relax we realize the power of nature that is forgotten in the city.

My wild snorting beast is down at the stream drinking water with the other horse. After the horses have a rest it’s time to get back on the trail. Mounting my horse was as pain full as the dismount was and I cringe as I struggle into place.

My gray mare refreshed from her break was ready to go. But with each step we took on the slow ride back I was reminded of the tremendous beating my back side was taking. The chaffing of the in side of the legs were almost as bad. I was certain I was going to be a raw piece of meat by the time we returned. Looking back at the old cowboy who was our guide I saw a relaxed toughen real cowboy. I wondered how it took him to toughen up.

Back at camp after a slow dismount and some slow stretches it was time to find some grub. Funny by the time we sat down to a heaty meal the soreness had began to pass and each of us was looking forward to the next days adventure. Perhaps it didn’t take that long to toughen us city folks up afterall.

Conversation was hearty and load at the table as we busily exchanged ideas about our first day as a cowboy on the trails. There was excitement, pride, and an over all feeling of accomplishment. So this is how the real cowboy’s felt after a day on the range. Perhaps there really was something missing in city life.

By the end of my vacation the gray wild snorting horse turned out to be my greatest companion on all our daily rides. The name of the gray is Calaway. If you ever get the chance to ride this horse you will be pleased with her steady but gentle manor. Even my red western wear shirt, tan boots and my large white hat never spooked her. After all she is used to carrying and caring for plenty of want to be cowboys and cowgirls giving each a story and adventure all of their own.

To my mind there are two distinctly different types of landscape photography around. That of the natural landscape photography, and that of the urban landscape photography. Both have their pros and both have their cons, and it’s really up to the photographer and their sense of imagination to get across to us a grand scene.

Be that as it may though, to get a decent landscape photography shot you don’t need to travel to far and distant lands, in fact you don’t even need to leave your home.

To start your landscape photography you can just take a ride on out to your back, or front yard, and have a quick go there to see how well you can make this everyday setting into something extraordinary.

Of course the fun with traveling to far and distant lands to get your landscape photography shots is that most of the hard work has already been done for you.

The scenes have already been set to perfection and there’s always going to be some really great vantage point that you can go to, to take your pictures.

The trouble with going it at home is that you need to set the shot up for yourself. You need to see the good in your yard and you need to be able to translate that into something that doesn’t look like your back yard.

Landscape photography is not an easy task, but it is well worth the try as you open yourself up to the vast array of possibilities and you learn to think outside of the box. Shots of lightning streaking down from the sky, tumbling waterfalls, roiling seas and densely packed green foliage from the middle of a rainforest, we’ve seen them all and yet we keep coming back for more. We never tire of seeing these glorious photographs, just as we never tire of seeing the more mundane landscape shots either.

The ones taken of the more tranquil scenes, of ponds filled with lily pads, of gardens filled with riotous flowers, and of mile upon mile of rolling farmland stretching out into the distance as far as the eye can see. These all appeal to us and what appeals to us most is what we will also try to photograph.

The urban jungle on the other hand is not something that appeals to everybody. Some find it to be too stark and prefer instead the landscape photography view of nature.

But the urban jungle is a truly magnificent place in which you can get lost and take the most amazing pictures. You just need to know where and how to look. There are so many interesting sights that we take for granted and pass by everyday without thinking twice about it.

It’s only when the truly inspired landscape photographer takes a look into this little world of ours and sees it for what it is and shoots it, that we also see the beauty in it. As you can see, and as you have seen in the past, landscape photography doesn’t need to be only about Nature’s landscapes, it can also be about the magnificence of man-made landscapes as well.

Your subject will turn out stiff and unwilling and it will come through in the photograph as well, and it won’t matter how good a photographer you are, or how much wizardry you can do with editing software.

If the original photograph you take is flawed then there’s not much you can do about it except go back to the drawing board. And by the drawing board here I don’t mean your portrait photography skills but the need for you to brush up on your people skills. And don’t worry if the first ever portrait photograph you take is of the person looking stiff and unnatural, you just need to keep trying until you get it right. Besides, most first attempts at anything invariably come out looking wrong so don’t get discouraged.

It’s only when things are still looking decidedly dicey after about two years of almost dedicated portrait photography that you might want to think about brushing off those people skills you knew you had but which you haven’t been able to find.

For my very first portrait photography session, I hijacked my sister into being my willing victim – oops, I meant to say guinea pig – and I can tell you that the end results were disastrous to say the least.

After that I just forgot all about it and left my desire for portrait photography behind me. Again at this point it was the whole film and processing thing, I didn’t feel like wasting my time and money on something that I clearly wasn’t good at. I also knew that no matter how much I tried to brush up my people skills that that was really as good as it got. So there I was, and there was portrait photography, a seemingly unobtainable goal in my photographic life, until that is of course, I bought my digital camera.

And I have to say that after that, whole new worlds opened up to me and I even went so far as to dream about doing some portrait photography as well. Luckily for me as the years had passed my people skills had also loosened up a little bit and I wasn’t so stiff-necked when I went it to this time. My photographs were still stiff necked, in the beginning at least, but they did improve with time and I can now take a decent portrait photograph without too much of a problem.

The moral of the story then? The digital camera is good for experimenting with photography. And portrait photography is good if you can easily interact with your fellow human being. But overall, don’t give up on portrait photography just because your very first shots were far from perfect. Give it a few more tries and don’t lose hope that you’ll eventually get something more than halfway decent.

Before I forget, I’d also like to point out that portrait photography need not only be about the traditional portraiture. You have many options open to you and which one you take depends to a large amount on your subject, basically which type of portrait would display them best, and your own inclinations. This was just to give you an idea of what type of portrait photography you can look forward to.

Heavy midday sunlight is not ideal for photography lighting and is avoided by most photographers, although a novice will generally have a go at it only to find out that not even a polarizer will work at the best of times in midday sun conditions. However, it has to be said that you can get some great shots from a heavily overcast sky. You just have to know what you’re looking for in the end result of the shot.

And finally when all is said and done and photography lighting conditions aren’t ideal, if they have the ability to, quite a few photographers will switch to the use of artificial photography lighting.

This could be anything between an on-camera flash, to an off-camera flash, to full blown studio photography lighting. Obviously it depends on the situation and what you’re photographing, but for the most part many photographers will only resort to use of this method of photography lighting scene in extreme cases.

If you decide that you do want to leave a lump sum behind, then think about how much your dependents would need to maintain the same standard of living. For example, your yearly salary would be a good indication. Then multiply that amount by the number of years that you think they will need to be financially supported – and that’s the amount you need to insure for. Don’t listen to the life insurance company’s estimation of how much cover you need, they invariably overestimate by a large margin.

Life insurance doesn’t have to be expensive either. A 35 year old man wanting £100,000 worth of cover for 20 years can be covered for less than £8.50 a month from insurers like Sainsbury’s, Virgin Money, Asda, AA and Egg – and a number of other big name insurers like Norwich Union, Standard Life and Legal & General come in at less than £9 a month – so it’s not going to break the bank!
